Ok at first i thought i would blog about the first year as a Music Teacher. well as you can probably see it didn't work very well. so plan B! I am a Middle School Music Teacher teaching Choir, Musical Theater, and Music Appreciation. Here i will share games and experiences that i encounter in my class and with my students.

one year later
ok so i am really bad at this. my first year of teaching is over!
i am in my second year now but due to signing my contract i am TECHNICALLY a first year teacher this year. so i have to go through all the meetings and everything this year.
this year my schedule has changed a little. Last year i had 3 choirs, Handbells and strings. This year i Have 3 Musical theater classes, 1 Choir class and 1 Strings class. I am really excited about the Musical Theater classes. there are about 120 kids in the Musical theater classes together and all the kids seem to be buying in to it. Because my planed 2 choir classes got put together in one class i now have about 35 kids in choir. this is good and bad. the good part is the full sound that i get for having 35 singers. the problem is that the ability and knowledge level in the class are very different. The Strings class has many different levels but we new that was going to happen to begin with. We have split the kids in two and half the classes i take the advanced students out in to the Cafeteria and we work on harder material.
Last year we had many changes at my School we added uniforms, a new behavior model, and some new administration changes. This year we still have uniforms, the same behavior model (not as informed as it was last year) and the same administration. We added this year a block schedule for two out of the five days. On the block days we also aded an enrichment class. originally we were told we would get to expand on our own curriculum but when we got to school this year they decided we needed to focus on reading due to our low test scores in reading. this worked out for me i guess, i am reading the script West Side Story with my students and then we applied it to the movie and to Romeo and Juliet. it has actually been really fun for me and the kids i think.
This year i decided to also make a project for my advanced strings class. I split them up and they made informational videos for the new students and we put them up online. they were on topics like how to hold the instrument, how to warm up, and how to care for the instrument.

my choir kids have many opportunities to perform this year including the veterans assembly and school spirit assembles. they will also be singing in at least one competition and the option on Solo Ensemble. I also have lots of students interested in Honor Choir auditions. i am hoping that some of them will make it and we will get to go to Churchill to participate.
My Musical Theater class will be participating in a drug DVD that the health teacher is involved in. the students are going to make short songs that are about drug effects and other drug facts that will then be played as transitions to the information about drugs. the DVD's will then be sent all over the state to help with drug awainess. the students are way excited. other then that i am hoping to do a flash mob at one of the assemblies or at lunch, but we have all year for that! ;)

oops
well i suck at keeping this updated.
well the last couple months have been hectic but good at the same time.
Saturday we had our local/regional Solo Ensemble and my students did great! I had two out of the 10 Middle School Students who competed and one of my singers got the Merit award! then in strings we swept the Middle School division, with winning the Solo for violin and Ensemble with a Quartet. i was so proud of the kids and the way they represented the school.
now we are starting testing. tomorrow i get to sit observing 21 students while they take a standardized test. Always a fun time, at least this time around i don't have to take the tests!
well hopefully i will be better at writing on this from now on.

finally offered a job
well today i interviewed for the position i have been working in the last semester...... confused let me explain.
i was hired as a long term substitute for the choir position three days before the school year started. because i did not think there were any positions open in the district i had not finished all of my testing. the plan was to sub till my testing was complete and then interview for the position. my principal was being very generous with helping me in this process.
well the week before winter vacation and the day off my students winter concert i found out that i passed all of my tests and by the friday before spring break i was ok with the district to apply for the position. Last week we scheduled the interview for this afternoon and i was interviewed by the administration from my school. not even an hour later i was called to be told i was being offered the job.
it is such a great feeling knowing that i am officially the teacher and i cant be nocked out of it without notice which is where i was this morning.
now i can focus on Honor choir and Solo Ensemble..... more on that to come i promise!
